Victims Name: Over 100 conscripts (unknown)
Date Of Murder: 2 April 1998
Party Responsible For Murder: The NIF/GOS Regime.
Whereabouts Of Murderer(s): Still at large !
Case Description:
On April 2, 1998, a massacre took place at the small town of Ailafoon south east of Khartoum, Sudan. Conscripted children
massively tried to escape the camp to spend time with their families in the Muslim occasion of the Eid. The kids were
immediately shot by machine guns of the camp's NIF military force. At least 74 children were killed in the camp. The other
kids tried to save their lives by boat to reach out the east bank. The NIF guards opened fire on the children in the river.
The boat was sunk and 55 pupils were drowned into the Nile, many corpses subsequently floated.
The fate of about 1,800 kids is still unknown. The Sudanese people are still shocked by this unprecedented massacre in the
whole history of Sudan. The pressures by the masses compelled General Albashir to issue a decree allowing students to put
off compulsory military service until after they graduate from university, instead of conscription from secondary school. The
government, nonetheless, continued to conscript children of the North at the same time enslavement of children of the South
is pursued by the NIF forces.
SHRO-Cairo has issued many statements on the conscription camps based on witnesses who managed to escape to Cairo to meet with
the Organization. A detailed report issued by SHRO-Cairo in January 1998 reads: "The camps to which students have been
transferred for training were never adequately prepared. Many reports have indicate that food consisted of dry bread and some
badly cooked meals that were served in a very unhealthy way. This led to many cases of sickness. The drinking water in turn was
stored in rusty and dirty pots. Many kids were killed by scorpion bites as that occurred in Al-Markhiat Camp. NIF guards and spies
among students repeatedly killed or continuously tortured students who opposed
the humiliating treatment of camp administrators."
The SHRO-Cairo report further read: "Because of these horrible conditions, students called the camps "Death Camps" as political
opponents called the torture centers "Ghost Houses." The ministry of education collaborated fully with the ministry of defense to
dismiss students who abandon the camps for any reason, if they were medically sick."
"Most students do not believe in the civil war the NIF government is waging against their own people in the southern, western, and
eastern regions of the country. The NIF savage regime has never recognized the right of these children "as citizens" to enjoy the
right to conscientious objection. Up to this moment, NIF rulers conscript the children of Sudan in the death camps and send those
who are not killed by scorpions or sickness or NIF machine guns in the camps, to be killed in the war zones with no training or
belief in the war. All these crimes are committed by the NIF rulers, the military
leaders and the war criminals who must be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.
